The black two year old colt was frisky. He shifted uneasily in the gates, but had long since been broken to start from them. Amber Black was even more nervous. Her colt was an entrant in the Unicorn Horn Juvenile, the biggest race he was running in yet. Amber definitely wanted her big colt to win, knowing he had heart. The workout ahead of them was only a short four furlong sprint along the stretch, just enough to sharped Grand Silence up.
The gate doors clattered open with the chiming of bells. Grand Silence leaped out, his hooves shooting into the dirt as he flew along. Amber kept close to the black son of Grand Slam, her eyes squeezed shut as wind made them teary. Her colt flew through first furlong. Amber dropped the reins a bit and let him go.
With invisible wings, Silencio soared towards the finish wire. He responded to Amber's signals, having learned to trust her. The second furlong flashed past. Now Amber dropped the reins still more, and then Silencio roared to second gear, preparing himself. Sweat dripped onto Amber's glove-clad hands, but all she could feel was icy wind flowing through her.
This was it. This was the last furlong. Amber finally dropped her reins and let him have his head. Silencio suddenly tapped his reserves. It was like being on a cannon. The speed reached it's max, and horse and rider flashed past the finish wire as if it was nothing. Only too soon, their workout was complete. Grand Silence was ready for the Juvenile.
