Kallisto was bred with the full intention of crossing two much-loved horses in the barn to produce a much-loved horse. Mystical Melody is a mare now owned by the inactive Akita Rose Stables, but before that time period Mel was actually bred and raced by us until her four year old season. She was out of On To Dancing, a foundation Breeding Hall of Fame inductee mare who has also produced On To The Spotlight (dam of Ode To Glory, In The Spotlight, Spotlight Pride, Piece of Me), Radiance (sire of Radiation Therapy, Reflected In Water, Radiant Silver, Adrasteia, Radiant Heat), and Fire Dancer (dam of Prometheus, Exotic Dancer). Her siblings produced well and also ran competitively in HoTYs; On To The Spotlight won the Continental Cup, Cox Plate, and Pegasus Stakes, Radiance earned himself a spot in the Hall of Fame with victories in Belmont Stakes, Breeders Cup Marathon, and Breeders Cup Classic, and Fire Dancer capped off her career with a victory over many rivals in the Breeders Cup Marathon. This pedigree is loaded with stamina, but Mystical Melody proved to have the flexibility to handle it all, with top three placings in each leg of the Triple Crown and victories in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint and the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile. To balance Mel's stamina, we crossed her with Hall of Fame inductee Forbidden To Fly. Fly won 39 races in his career, including the Breeders Cup Juvenile, Breeders Cup Sprint, and the Dubai World Sprint. He also hailed from a powerful, flexible pedigree; his sire Flying Colours is mainly a sprinting sire, but Forbidden Wings had produced horses who excelled at all distances (Silent Wings, HoF Pegasus Wings, HoF Flashy Wings, Taboo). Kallisto has inherited all the flexibility and speed that her pedigree has to offer her, with victories ranging from six to ten furlongs.

Kallisto was expected to be bar-none the craziest horse ever born. By a hyperactive, loud sire and out of an energetic dam, Kalli's craziness was expected - but we certainly couldn't have predicted just how crazy the filly would end up being. Kalli is always energetic. She needs to be let out of her stall and worked at least twice a day in order to keep her energy down to manageable levels, and sometimes even that isn't enough. Kalli thrives on motion, whether it be galloping up and down the track or going for long walks around the barns and grounds. She also thrives on social interaction and simply cannot be left alone without some sort of companion, be it the barn cat or a companionable pony friend. However, Kalli does not lack focus. While Henna Turath had to work extra hard to make her sire focus, with Kalli focus comes naturally. The filly is intensely curious about the world around her and all she needs is to be presented with a novel stimulus in order to capture her attention. Above all, she is a feather-light filly that thrives on attention and novelty - a perfect combination for a focused athlete that the staff can actually handle.

Leg Type: Front Runner
Kallisto remains feather-light on the track. She moves as though she's floating on air, but there's no doubt as to her intense focus. Kalli pays attention to everything and loves the track - there's always something novel going on! She was an easy horse to gate train due to her focus. Kalli breaks rapidly and has a high cruising speed, which factored into our decision to run her at the front. Kalli would simply find herself close to the pace anyway, and is happy to take the lead. She is, however, an incredibly tactical front runner. As long as she's near the pace at the front, Kalli doesn't care if she isn't in first place. She is content to bide her time and wait for Krystal's signal before moving into the lead. Kalli is incredibly responsive and it never takes much to get this filly to go. It helps that she has a strong turn of foot and can turn her cruising speed into a full tilt sprint within two heartbeats. Kalli loves races that are fast and excels especially when there's a lot of horses running up front with her. She loves the challenge of staying up front from gate to wire and brings heart and determination to the races, every time.
