We weren't sure what to expect from Shade, given the hyperactivity of his sire and the quiet affection but initial spookiness of his dam. One thing that is immediately apparent about the small bay is his presence. You always know when Shade is in the same room or the vicinity as you, and not because he loudly proclaims his presence but because you can just feel this horse looking at you. Shade is a quiet horse, not one for making noise - his eyes and ears do his talking. Shade isn't emotionally effervescent - instead, he's a quiet but cunning and intelligent horse. He moves like liquid mercury, all quick and energy efficient motions that catch the eye because of the power of them. Shade is strong and silent, but he accepts the company of other horses and humans without batting an eye. Nothing gets this horse worked up, not even annoying other horses or a lot of noise and activity trackside. He is very observant and seems to not miss anything that goes on around him. He is adaptable in the face of those observation skills, always prepared for what comes his way. Shade is the horse who is quiet and dependable, who will never make a fuss, be easy to handle, and be quick to pick up on things. He is intelligent as well, the true package deal. One expects fire from him because Shade occasionally gives off the aura of a horse ready to blow, but if he is we don't know about it. He's not social, but minds his own business and can be trusted near other horses to not be the cause of any problems.
Leg Type: Front Runner
Shade's personality on the track is the same as his one off of it. The noise and activity don't bother him, the gate crew doesn't bother him, the horses losing his mind near him don't bother him - all Shade wants to do when on turf or dirt is get the show on the road. This is the horse that catches some eyes for a few contemplative seconds each before they move on to the flashy colt rearing in gate two or the dazzling filly in gate six. Shade brings the attention very firmly back to him, however, the minute the gates open up. Shade shows the power of his sireline by typically having the fastest break in the field and assuming the lead immediately. The scary thing about him, though, is the stamina infusion from his dam. Apache's Shadow ran up to eleven furlongs, but Pegasus Wings could never get anything longer than seven. Shade is the combination of these two legacies, getting up to eight furlongs thanks to his dam with the potential to cultivate more stamina in the future open to us. With his dam's stamina legacy, Shade takes to the front with aplomb, setting the pace or coasting alongside of it with ease and energy. His high cruising speed allows him to stay with the pace and, when the time comes, Shade will rebreak and gut it out for the victory with speed you almost wouldn't have expected him to have. Shade is a true front running type; there is no better place for this bolt of lightning in the field.
