You know what looks great against a gray background? Mud! That's what Melo thinks, too. The petite gray filly is an absolute swamp monster. Most people think a pristine, well-groomed horse is a thing of beauty; Melo begs to differ. She needs her coating of mud, thank you very much. Grooming feels great, and it deceives Melo for one instant that maybe being clean is a good thing, but the minute she's let loose she's back to creating a mess and somehow painting her coat with it. Leave her in a stall? Melo will cover herself with hay and poop, sometimes even sprinkling the hay onto her back as though storing snacks for later. Put her in a pasture? Forget it. Melo rolls at least once every half hour to make sure she gets a good coating of dirt, dust, and grass. Melo is a messy eater, loving to get grain and hay all over her nose. For such a finely pedigreed filly, she is a complete mess. Melo is easy enough to handle, though; she won't bite, she won't rear, and she doesn't get into mood swings like her fellow females tend to. She's sociable enough provided nobody overtly bothers her or messes with her mess routine. She is the definition of easy to handle, hard to maintain. Melo is the kind of horse who needs semi constant surveillance to make sure she's not getting into trouble. She also puts on weight more easily than muscle, requiring a lot of conditioning to attain and maintain peak form. Melo is beautiful to look at, though, whether covered in mud or freshly groomed. She's a barn favorite for her easy-going antics and otherwise sweet demeanor. We just wish she'd be less of a messy horse!
Leg Type: Closer
Melo is a bit mischievous on the track. She remains easy to handle, but she's likely to get up to no good - "accidentally" backing into the horse behind her in the post parade or walking ring, lightly crushing a gate handler on her way in, nipping at her paddock pony's rider, etc. Provided her jockey is alert, she presents no problems at all, but the inattentive jockey or handler is in for a time. When it comes to track conditions, there is no horse better at handling soft ground or mud than Melo - in fact, her fastest times seem to come over the worst of surfaces. Melo is a 100% mudder who runs fine over fast but prefers softer ground to play in. Unsurprisingly, Melo likes to be in the back where all the dirt that's kicked up lands on her. She'll gallop along happily, soaking up the dirt, before her jockey asks her to move in the final quarter. Then, Melo swings to wherever the most space is and races for home. She's a quick accelerator who will happily go when asked, kicking up dirt of her own as she pounds for home, likely to be more of a bay than a gray as she flashes under the wire in first.
