Apollo is a gorgeous seventeen hands of pure equine perfection that houses a completely nutty interior. He may look regal, striding around with powerful purpose, but Apollo is terrified of almost anything that moves. A leaf falls on him when he's grazing in the pasture? He'll freak out, galloping off with the whites of his eyes showing, liable to plow into a fence that he'll forget was there even though he's seen and been around that fence for months. New horse in the barn? No horse will be more scared than Apollo, who'll stare down the horse as though it's death incarnate before suddenly realizing that it's just a horse and going back to his hay. Apollo takes forever to acclimate to anything; breaking him took a full two months longer than the other members of his crop, and gate training him was a disaster until one day he finally decided to calm down and walked in as though he'd been doing it all his life. This is why Apollo is shipped out to his races a few weeks in advance; he needs to acclimate to each track in order to run his best there. It's not that Apollo is stupid, though - he's just scared of everything and doesn't handle surprises too well. He needs to be handled cautiously and patiently in order to prevent harm to himself and others. And when Apollo knows his environment and his compatriots, he's certainly the master of it; you can't say no to his seventeen hands of bulk, nor to the look of intimidation he may cast (inherited from his dam) in order to get what he wants, at least until his inner chicken reveals itself and he bolts away from yet another twig that's suddenly appeared and scared him.
Leg Type: Front Runner
When Apollo first ran on the track, we couldn't tell if he was just bolting and hoping for the best the whole time or actually running. Apollo is the kind of horse who runs as though his tail is constantly on fire. To get him to handle the noise and bustle of the track, Apollo wears blinkers and ear stuffies. He's very easy to handle in that he listens to every command he's given, but he's hard to handle when you're not alert to everything around you that might scare him. He's tough to ride in that he's overactive even with his senses dulled. Apollo loads last into the gate to prevent him from wrecking the terrifying metal contraption, and he breaks so fast it's as though he started from a walk rather than a standstill. He takes a position right at the front and is the type of horse whose fire never seems to go out during a race; he blazes fast for the first half, and then blazes even faster for the final one. He has mountains of classic stamina from his dam and speed and regality from his famous Hall of Fame sire, and their combination has created a horse whose front running speed is almost unbeatable. With the right jockey up top who knows to let him blaze just enough to calm him and then times the final blaze perfectly, Apollo is peerless in his speed. He's liable to take to the front and stay there for the whole race, finding reserves to run even faster just as you'd think he'd be out.
