Pedigree: BHoF Sweet Sugar Cane x HoF Dash of Sugar
Sweet Like Sugar reminds us of a certain other gray dirt sprinter mare - Lynara's Kingdom, to be exact. She takes after her dam, Hall of Fame sprinting sensation Dash Of Sugar, in terms of her personality. She can be very unpredictable, going from sweet and quiet one minute to completely unruly and aggressive the next. We're unsure of exactly what triggers these mood swings - perhaps a desire to simply express, at all times of day? Regardless of these mood swings, it is clear that Candy is highly intelligent. When she's quiet, it's very apparent that she's thinking something over - that, or plotting to take over the world, for all we know. If she's going a bit crazy and is aggressive, though, we know that whatever Candy is thinking must not be good. Candy is typically a nice horse. She doesn't act aggressive, doesn't bother her handlers and is an absolute joy to work with. Get her riled up, though, and Candy becomes a different horse entirely. On the track, Candy exhibits her less calm side. She is difficult to handle because she is usually excited about the race she is about to run. Competition jazzes her up. Candy gets like this in workouts too, and loves nothing more than a good hard run around the track. She loves to chase horses down and pass right on by. Candy needs a firm handed rider to keep her blazing speed under control, and her match with Christopher Black was none too unexpected considering the hidden fire of both of their personalities.
Leg Type: Preceder
As mentioned before, Candy is a tough horse to handle on the track. She gets very excited about the race ahead of her and can be quite the hard horse to handle, right up to the gate. Once loaded, however, nothing could break Candy's focus. She is all focused fire, the gun waiting to be shot. Candy has mountains of speed and can easily lead races wire to wire, but when there is no one in front of this filly to try and beat she quickly loses interest. Thus, we picked the next best thing for the filly and run her as a preceder, keeping one horse in front or alongside in order to maintain her motivation. Her speed is kept firmly under control until the last furlong or two of the race. Then, if the move is timed exactly right, Candy races to the front. She usually wins by a length or less and typically in a finish that leaves us breathless with anticipation, but Candy knows to bring it home. Candy is the dogfighter that doesn't go down due to her style. Competition energizes her; being challenged is what brings the most out of this filly, and when such competition disappears Candy no longer runs at her best. She loves to win but sees no point unless the win is hard fought. And fight she will, for Candy is one of the most fiercely determined horses you will ever encounter on the track.
