Sunny is an eager beaver kind of colt. He likes to jump into things without thinking twice, or without being given any kind of direction by his handlers. He wants to try things out for himself, see where his curiosity takes him. Usually it ends up with him getting into some kind of trouble, specially out in the paddocks. An interesting quirk about Sunny is that the danged horse is ticklish, particularly around his girth. This was learned when he was being saddled for the first time in his light ground training and tossing his head, kicking out - the whole nine yards.
We've learned to to saddle him up in steps now and not spend more time on his girth than is necessary. Out in the paddocks - when he's not being worked with - and when he's not looking for trouble, he enjoys playing with horse toys, or any kind of 'project' Kim comes up with to keep the horse busy and out of the fences. It's not unusual to have the colt in someone else's business - he has had his fair share of porcupine encounters. This horse has a very good mind on him, and if someone could get him to focus all that determined energy somewhere, like on the track, he'd be golden.
After someone finally gets him saddled up, and out of any neighbouring flower beds (he'll stick his nose into just about anything to see if it's edible), you'll find that he leads up to the starting gates rather easily. He doesn't seem to get too excited from other horses being in the starting gate, seeming rather calm himself. When the gates open he swerves ahead, clearly taking advantage of any horses who lingered for a fraction of a second longer in the gates than himself.
He'll surge forward towards the front of the pack and will force himself to fight out that lead position during the entirety of the race. If a horse comes up behind him, or alongside him he'll push even harder. The lead spot is just where he wants to be, he doesn't like being pinned between the pack, or completely behind the pack. He wants to be where he can see ahead of himself, and if anyone tries to challenge him for his position, he'll fight hard at the bit, often overriding any attempts to slow down by his jockey in an attempt to retain his place ahead.
